Have spent many happy childhood years in Newcastle, and the fact that some of my mother's family lived in Sydney, I got familiar with this 100 mile journey, down the highway. I used to wonder why this trip down and up the coast seldom involved seeing the sea. But if you look at the geography of the region, then you can see how many inlets the sea has cut into this old continent.

You can see how jagged the coast is. My father used to drive us down the old highway, grey colour, since the newer, red highway/expressway/tollway did not exist then.
